On the Saturday, February 24th, 2024 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, United and American Airlines raise baggage fees, and American Queen Voyages (the river cruise line) is out of business. A new piece of technology in restaurants is a hand-held software system that allows the server to total your bill, then hand you the machine, in their presence, to decide on a gratuity amount. Is it just us, or is that "in your face" system designed to pressure the diner into a higher gratuity? Carry-on bags have been a pain for airlines ever since they started charging for baggage. If only they would enforce their own carry-on rules, the problem might be solved. We discuss carry-ons and how airlines on one hand are telling you to check your bags, when in many instances there is plenty of room for them in the overheads. What's up? On the Sunday, June 4th, 2023 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, Planet Hollywood calls it quits after 30 years in Las Vegas, and Spirit Airlines becomes the latest to join those in "melt down land" last Thursday, when a computer glitch caused nearly 90% of their flights to be delayed or canceled. Carry on bags are often a battle zone on planes. In order to avoid baggage fees, people haul on everything but the kitchen sink. Is it time to enforce the carry-on rules? One airline has a unique approach. Frontier is paying gate agents a bonus/commission on bags they flag at the gate? We talk about whether or not that idea is a winner or a dud. Mark just returned from a trip to many baseball landmarks and shares his thoughts on The Negro Leagues Museum, the Field of Dreams movie site, Wrigley Field, the Baseball Hall of Fame, Yankee Stadium and many more. On the Sunday, April 30th, 2023 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, a woman got arrested in Sydney, after arriving on a flight from LA with a 24-carat gold-plated gun in her luggage. Yosemite National Park is closed after warm temperatures brought the much dreaded spring melt flooding. Mark relates two situations which occurred on a flight he was on Saturday night, as examples of games people play with flight attendants. Hiding over-the-limit carry-ons and not following rules regarding pets on board are two examples he witnessed. Conceding it's possible for a flight attendant to have a bad day, one has to keep in mind they can have you removed from the aircraft, or worse. Mark suggest picking your battles carefully, or maybe just not playing stupid little games. Do you really think you are the first person ever to use a coat to conceal an extra carry-on? Be a smarter traveler and give the flight attendants a break. Is inflation having a bearing on the travel decisions you make for this summer? Or just ridiculously high prices. The guys talk about why this might be the year to pick a less-popular destination. Finally, Mark shares some of his experience from the second half of his journey with 29 travelers down the Chicago-Oklahoma City portion of fabled Route 66. He highlights some of the classic attractions, hotels and restaurants along the old highway and talks about why you might consider a short journey if you can't make an extended trip.
