On the Saturday, October 26th, 2024 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, Disney is growing its cruise ship fleet from 5 to 13 ships in the next 7 years, and Alaska Airlines has a 4-state fly pass, but we say buyer beware. Our Smarter Traveler segment highlights a taxi ride Mark took in downtown Detroit last week, and really he was taken. $25 for a 2-mile ride. We explain how to avoid getting yourself in a similar situation. Did he really pay $25 for a 2-mile ride? He did. Each year, a small group of local folks, led by the Stocking family, raise a big chunk of cash to make sure those who are gone are not forgotten, by placing boughs on the 35,000 military graves at the Sacramento Valley National Cemetery. We have an update on this year's efforts, including Mark's recount of a most amazing fundraiser last Sunday. Our Odds and Ends portion of the show has a "skipping" theme. Disney has a new line-SKIPPING ticket, and American Airlines has won a victory over the SKIP-lagging web site. What is skip-lagging? We'll explain.

On the Sunday, August 20th, 2023 edition of The Travel Guys… In The Travel News, tourists continue to make headlines - now it's two guys who climbed onto the Eiffel Tower drunk and passed out; and Las Vegas strip hotels are apparently dealing with an onslaught of bed bugs. They are incredibly difficult to get rid of once they find a home. Last week, Mark suggested you buy AirTags, and offered a link with what would have been an amazing price ($10 for 4). Except he didn't have the right link. They are a little more expensive than that. Like 8-9x as much. Oops. The correct link can be found on this page. A few weeks ago, we discussed the concept of "Skip-lagging," buying an airline ticket, knowing you weren't going to travel to the final destination, throwing part of the ticket away, in order to take advantage of the strange way airlines price tickets. We warned you at the time the airlines don't consider it cool, and indeed now American Airlines is suing an online company which helps people commit the "Skip-lagging" offense. We have an update. The battle against resort and other bogus fees hoisted on travelers continues. Charlie Leocha from Travelers United joins to update us on state and national legislation. Heather Fortes, who is the owner of SacTown Bites, our local foodie tour company, is on hand to discuss some of her offerings, both in Sacramento and in surrounding communities.

On the Sunday, January 31st, 2021 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, President Biden has made masks officially mandatory on trains and planes (or in/on federal land/property); Tauck Tours has launched its first trip in 10 months, and American Airlines is watching for cheaters - skiplaggers, you know who you are. The idea was floated last week to require passengers on domestic airline flights to be COVID tested before flying. The airlines were not enamored by the idea, nor was the public. Where do you stand? We talk about it in our Smarter Traveler Segment. Travelers United, in Washington, D.C., is always looking out for the traveler on the road. They believe airlines need a Sick Passenger Rule. On the Sunday, August 11th, 2019 edition of The Travel Guys… In The Travel News, there are updated travel warnings for Hong Kong, Mark and Tom talk about what the rest of the world is saying about travel to these United States in light of recent mass public shootings and the Sacramento Airport has been named one of the best in the country. Mark talks about being a smarter traveler when it comes to the coffee maker in your hotel room.  "At a minimum, open it and look inside in a good light, not that little dim one over the coffee area.  How often is it cleaned?  What did the previous guest run through it?  Heat helps kill germs, but....  Why not heat water in a microwave and make your coffee or tea that way and avoid 'traveler's revenge'."  We also talk about Chris Elliott's recent article about passengers of size on airplanes. Ed Perkins of Consumer Report fame and other travel publications, joins us to talk about "Skip-lagging."  It's a questionably legal action travelers use to beat the airlines.  Ed talks about what it is and whether or not you should consider it as a hack on airfares.
