On the Saturday, March 8th, 2025 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, Southwest makes massive cuts to earnings in its frequent flyer program (more on that subject later in the program); and a United airlines employee is busted in a huge bribery and payola scheme at the Newark Airport. The Smarter Traveler segment of the program addresses the value of taking the "first flight out in the morning." There are ups and downs of getting up before the chickens, and the guys explain why rising early is probably a smart move. Palm Springs is a popular destination for travelers from our area, and Mark shares a host of opinions on restaurants and attractions, plus tells you one hotel you might want to place on your "do not stay" list. Reward and loyalty programs for hotel chains and airlines are big business. But recently, the changes in the number of points needed for rooms and air tickets has been changing, and not in the favor of the traveler. Now Southwest is cutting the number of points you earn in its Rapid Rewards program on its most popular tickets. We'll update you on the state of rewards programs.

On the Saturday, February 22nd, 2025 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, the airlines make their first effort to overturn one of Joe Biden’s consumer friendly rules; and are Canadians REALLY canceling their US travel plans? Seems to be some disagreement on that subject. One of the hottest topics in travel these days is the Apple AirTag. The device, which helps you locate lost luggage, is in the news again this week, as American becomes the last of the “big three” airlines to use the tags to help locate lost luggage. The Wall Street Journal has ranked America’s airlines, based on their 2024 performance. We have details on who’s on the top and who’s on the bottom - Delta and Allegiant appear to be the biggest winners. Fort Bragg, on the California Coast, is a great discovery for those who love funky places on the ocean. Today, we’ll talk to the general manger of the legendary Skunk Train, and add our own thoughts on one of California’s least known coastal getaway destinations.

Here's a thought: Canadians spend more money in our country as tourists than travelers from ANY OTHER DESTINATION; and now they are talking seriously about cutting back on travel to their previously friendly neighbor as the result of tariff talks. American Airlines is rumored to be on the verge of a crackdown on carry-on bags. You know, the ones that are WAY too big to meet the sizing requirement and take up a lot of overhead bin space. Yeah, THOSE bags. This may not have a pretty ending. More in our Smarter Traveler segment. Our friend Ned Levi from Travelers United joins us to share his tips about picking a cabin on a cruise ship. It's one of our most informative interviews of all time, as Ned talks about inside vs. outside, protecting yourself from motion sickness, noise on board and all sorts of things a veteran cruiser like Ned can share to help you select your cabin. Tom gets Mark to share his thoughts on a variety of travel questions, everything from the impact of tariffs to some of his favorite haunts.
On the Saturday, February 1st, 2025 edition of The Travel Guys… In the Travel News, Sacramento International had over 13.6 million passengers pass through the airport in 2024, a new record; and Spirit Airlines says no, at least initially to another merger offer from Spirit. In our Smarter Traveler segment, we report that the "hard deadline" for the REAL ID for travelers of May 7, isn't really. It's a soft deadline, and you will be warned by TSA you only have until May 7, 2027 to get your REAL ID. Airline lounge membership generally comes at a cost. A fee, an upscale credit card you pay for, there is a dollar amount attached. Some travelers love the lounges, some don't. Mark and Reporter Clayton Whitehead have a "discussion" about lounges. Clayton loves 'em, Mark not so much. Point/Counterpoint. Rick Steves was in town for a KVIE function last week, and we got a chance to talk a little about the upcoming year with a true travel guru.
